YULA Defeats MDY With Strong Defense

Up three and with two minutes left, the YULA Panthers (Los Angeles, CA) were able to knock down key free throws to seal a 44-36 win against the MDY Warriors (Brooklyn, NY). The Warriors tried to claw their way back late in the game, but were not able to convert on a layup attempt and a few long threes.

With the score tied early in the fourth quarter, point guard Menachem Solomon hit two consecutive threes to give the Panthers a six point lead after starting the game 0-7 from 3-point land.

The Panthers also got a big fourth quarter from Avi Zillbertstein who scored 8 of his game high 22 points in the fourth, and knocked down clutch free throws late in the game.

The Warriors were down eight at halftime but started the second half on a 10-0 run to take a two point lead in the third.

The Panther’s stifling defense was extremely impressive, as the Warriors shot just 30% from the field in the game. The Warriors leading scorer Morris Dweck had a team high 14 points but shot just 4-17 (24%) from the field.

The Panthers defense caused 7 first half turnovers, and center Jojo Himmelman had four of the Panther’s six blocks on the day.

The Panthers will face Frisch on Sunday in a Tier I semifinal on Big Sunday in the MSAC.
